The Importance of Reengagement: How Pearson & Peer Guides Can Assist

In this paper, we describe a partnership between Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) and Pearson Education, where we defined a reengagement trend behavior and used it as a flag for student outreach. Our focus was on a specific mathematics course (Contemporary Mathematics) for non-STEM major students.

Traditionally, active engagement in higher education courses requires learners to spend time reading sections of an assigned textbook. Feedback from learners suggests that they are discouraged from reading when the text is difficult to access and isn’t engaging. As an interactive digital environment, Revel aims to enhance students’ engagement with their reading by providing an interactive learning experience that incorporates multimedia content, opportunities to practice, and immediate feedback.

In Fall 2021, Pearson conducted three instructor interviews and surveyed 50 instructors and 313 students across the United States to gain a better understanding of their experience with, and perceptions of, Interactive Labs. Through this work, we found Interactive Labs facilitates active participation in learning, aids in the understanding of the scientific process, and conveys biology topics in a way that has real-world relevancy.

Dr. Peggy Goodson Rochelle has used Pearson eText and MyLab Education for years in courses to prepare future educators. She emphasizes the following benefits of these products: They are vetted, saving her the time investment of checking that the reading she assigns is accurate. Pearson offers strong product support, allowing her to get assistance from knowledgeable staff when she needs it. They offer many conveniences to students, including: Access to the text from the very start of the course; o Use of the products on their preferred devices; and o The opportunity to take practice quizzes. Peggy views Pearson eText and MyLab as “absolutely” helping her achieve her course goals. In particular, the embedded videos featuring real teachers and real students in real classrooms illustrate concepts in ways that help ensure students are ready to handle the challenges of teaching successfully.

Professor Laurie Metcalf reported many perceived advantages of using MediaShare for her online public speaking course. Specifically, she named her ability to accomplish the following in MediaShare: • Time-stamping specific feedback in students’ videos to support their development of public speaking skills • Providing more feedback to students’ videos because of the ability to copy and paste feedback in MediaShare’s grading rubric • Looking across assignments for the same student to determine whether a problem is recurring and adjusting her grading and communication with the student accordingly

In August 2020, Pearson published a correlational efficacy study with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro that found a positive relationship between students continuously improving on programming tasks in Revel Java Programming and overall student success in the course. To understand if this is a shared outcome across a wide variety of institutions, we identified instructors who were using Revel Java Programming in a similar way to the instructor in the efficacy study and interviewed them about their experience using Revel.

This study was conducted by Pearson's Impact Evaluation Team as part of their efficacy reporting. The purpose of the study was to explore the potential relationship between the use of Revel and its intended outcomes. Pearson conducted the study with 114 students taking an introductory computer science course between the Spring 2018 and Fall 2019 semesters. The students were attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Our analysis suggests that students tended to persist with programming tasks in Revel, despite these tasks authentically mimicking the challenges a professional programmer might face in a competitive workplace.

Course data shows students that chose to utilize Revel for studying and course preparation performed better overall. Student survey shows students enjoyed their experience with Revel, the vast majority finding it a better solution than their previous textbook, believing it was a good value for the money and it increased their understanding of the course material.

Hatheway-Dial saw the need to include Excel proficiency in her course for two main reasons: employers were asking for graduates with Excel skills, and a working knowledge of Excel would help students in their subsequent business courses. Hatheway-Dial used MyLab IT for Excel practice and assessment and offered an incentive for students to sit for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel certification exam. Data show that 63% of students who completed all MyLab IT assignments passed the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel certification exam, while just 25% of students who skipped one or more assignments passed.

Revel was adopted in order to encourage students to read the text prior to attending lecture. On an end-of-semester student survey, 95% of respondents agreed that completing Revel assignments prior to attend lecture helped them prepare for the new material being introduced that day in class.

MyLab Math educator study observes improved student outcomes after flipping the classroom in Liberal Arts Math courses

After implementing a flipped course model, average final course grades improved 8 percentage points in one course and 17 percentage points in another. 93% of student survey respondents agreed or strongly agreed that completing pre-class assignments in MyLab Math encouraged them to become familiar with the content.
